Going into this project I knew that this would be a real challenge. However, I had not yet realised just how much of a challenge this would be, as someone with limited drawing capabilites the idea that I would be drawing countless images with small changes each time for just two seconds of footage would be extremely difficult. This showed, as it would take me far longer to create the drawings, mixed with changing ideas and missing college due to unforseen circumstances I quickly fell behind and was not able to finish an animatic.
As a big part of this project character design was an essential part in the design process. Beginning with the brain storming of characters through newspaper and other media. This was supposed to give a sense of direction, a starting point for these characters. However, I was not able to develop them further, as someone who is not a confident drawer translating these newspaper figures into something animatable was far too difficult for me. As a result, after filming my pistol animation, I began recreating characters that would fit this narrative. Using videogames such as 'Ready or Not' and 'Insurgency' mixed with my own knowledge and experience I was able to create the characters seen on this page. Although I was able to create the characters with limited time left I wasn't able to create full character turnarounds as well as not being able to add them to an animatic as this process turned out to be far more difficult than I anticipated. As a result my lack of commitment to an idea and lack of confidence and experience in drawing held me back significantly as even simpler singular drawings like these would take me far too long. In response to this I could have simplified the character designs which might have allowed me to add them onto the animatic and environments. On the other hand environment design and the research behind each element was a more enjoyable experience. This theme fits more closely with what I could potentially end up doing which is environment design. Although I tried to enjoy this part of the project this style of animation was tough to enjoy, especially with the limited time given and how much I was able to achieve in that space of time. Although I would like to attempt this style of animation again. I would aim to attempt more simpler things, as a result of being thrown into the deep end with complex animations such as a walk cycle, that even top animators that I have had the chance to speak too through this course have told me is still a struggle. On a more positive note though I am still glad I attempted this and hope to have the chance to go back and further attempt some processes such as storyboarding, character design and the animation itself, as it has given me some relevant experience into my chosen field in addition to a few transferable skills.
